Skull

Here is the block-out for the skull. More details and texture will be applied later, but for now, this is more than enough. I am quite happy with my result, and I am looking forward to work further more on this project. I have a lecture at 12, but I have decided to dedicate this day for skeleton sculpting. I hope, to block-out the whole skeleton by the end of the day, but I don't know if I will be able to achieve it.

This skull was made before I started the blog. In the next post. I will show what I have done today!

Final Year Project

Being a 3rd year at Teesside University, I have to do a final year project where I get to decide what I want to do, this was somewhat clear to me, to create an anatomically correct 3d model. Where I sculpt all the bones and muscles. The reason behind my choice, is simply to be a better character artist. I want to have a wider understanding of anatomy, not just simply, but also complex anatomy. By doing so I am certain that I will produce more advanced and correct sculpts.

There is a lot of research in this project. I need to understand where all the bones are, how many, names and muscles. Why do I need to learn the names? The reason being, to communicate with other artists, and to be able to discuss whether the scapula should be more visible or if the base of the mandible is to high. I think it is important to know the language of the anatomy in order to understand it. Though, I am not saying it is dead on important to have the correct names for it, well, you could call the scapula for "bone-that-moves-when-moving-your-arm-at-the-back", but it might be easier to just say scapula.

This is the standard I want achieve.

In order to be able to achieve this, I need to understand how the measuring tool in Zbrush work properly, and understand the complex anatomy. The best way to attack the problem, will be to do some research and crack it wide open! A wise tutor said once, "Do you let yourself get distracted with "research"? -Get in and sculpt!
Baseline, I can only research to some extent, but I still need to do the sculpting, and I wont understand the form properly, unless I start sculpting!

Looking forward to start with this, It will be a challenge, but what is life without challenge?
